I read "The Garden Party" by Katherine Mansfield and followed the directions to the best of my ability. I didn't do the best with my analyzing of the text. Analyzing difficult texts has never been a strength of mine and my major goal for this year is to become a much more proficient reader and analyzer of complex literature. I was able to get the basics from the short story such as that Laura was sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place with her compassion and interest towards the lower class when she came from a family that couldn't care less about them. I also caught on to the mom giving Laura her hat signifying the passing down of her ideals. They say your parents are your biggest influence, and I feel like the giving of the hat sort of symbolized the mother's attempted influence on her daughter. I completely missed the Persephone allusion and comparison in the story. I have never been good at finding allusions and comparisons between texts. I really want to get better at it though because looking back the story would have been much more interesting had I made the connection between Laura symbolizing Persephone. Overall, my analysis and connections could definitely improve. Let's just say it's good this is the beginning of the english year and not the end.
